O'Grady grew up in Wheaton, Illinois, and attended the North High School of Wheaton in the year 1981. She is the daughter of Jan O'Grady (a financial planner) as well as Jim O'Grady. She was raised in Wheaton, Illinois, and was a graduate of Wheaton North High school in 1981. She was a part of a couple of commercials for television before moving to Los Angeles. Career O'Grady started her career as a models for Montgomery Ward, and well performing commercials in a variety of ways. She played a role in the 1988 romantic comedic film, She's Having a Baby. She then played a recurring part in ABC drama China Beach with Dana Delany. Also, she appeared on several other shows, and appeared in made for television and independent movies. Her debut role on television was in the role of Donna Abandando on the ABC crime show NYPD Blue. O'Grady was the tall-haired team secretary for ABC's NYPD Blue from 1993 through in 1996. Every year, she earned Emmy Award nods for Outstanding actress in a Drama Series. In 1995, she won the Screen Actors Guild Award Outstanding Ensemble Performance in Drama Series together with the ensemble.
